Success Stories

Earth Day 2010

The Expeditors family celebrated Earth Day 2010 in a variety of meaningful and innovative ways, and is continuing to do so throughout the year. From Bike to Work month in May, to energy efficient enhancements to our facilities worldwide, to planting new trees for varying offices across the globe, hundreds of Expeditors employees continue to help create a greener and brighter future.

Bike Commute Challenge

Expeditors CHQ had 4 teams participating in the Bike Commute Challenge during May's National Bike Month in the United States. The goal was to reduce carbon generating commute alternatives (e.g., automobile, bus or train) and while not the largest team in Seattle, we ranked high on a per rider basis showing a true commitment to CO2 reduction.

CY to CFS conversion cuts costs and emissions

Many shippers allow their vendors to fill their own containers leaving lots of "dead space" unused. This space is paid for and over inflates the need for spaces as well as number of ships required on the world's busiest trade lanes. Through Expeditors' Order Management services, customers have been able to reduce their total spend though multiple vendor consolidation in their key origins by purchasing fewer containers. Fewer containers means less cost and a smaller carbon footprint.

Expeditors earns Outstanding Performer status from US EPA

Expeditors understands that a big part of our environmental impact is based on the transportation services brokered for our customers. Since we don't own the planes, boats or trucks, participating in programs such as SmartWay in the United States that promotes the use of cleaner trucks allows us to ensure our customers can leverage eco friendly conveyances as much as possible. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Expeditors Outstanding Performer status based on our extensive participation in SmartWay. Expeditors shipped 105 intermodal trailers in 2008 that would have been truck loads and in 2009 we shipped over 1900, beating our goal by 1700. Expeditors' C02 reduction was over 13,000 tons by removing those truck loads and putting them on rail.

Grand Opening of the New Shanghai and Asia Regional Office

Natural resources are limited! This has been causing businesses to look at their facilities to act in a more socially responsible manner towards the environment all over the world. Expeditors is no exception. Expeditors Shanghai has set the standard and is leading by example on sustainability through the use of new intelligent energy management systems. These systems support an environmentally friendly building that uses less with effective energy management.

Reducing Cost and Carbon Footprint

By implementing an enhanced consolidation program, for a valued retail customer, we were able to cut cost by consolidating their shipments together in larger containers which resulted in a reduced carbon footprint, as fewer containers would be moving through the supply chain to ship the same volume of cargo.

Riding the Rails

Offered by our railroad partners, a new secured service named "bottom well", allowed us to book containers at the lower position of the rail car. The benefits included a more secure mode of shipping, transit time decreased, significant cost savings to the customer and we eliminated, on average, seventeen trucks per week on the road.

Sydney Warehouse Goes Green

Innovative thinking is at the core of our culture from conceptual commitment to integration of business process. By understanding the importance of how to make an impact to the sustainability landscape, Sydney Warehouse is adding societal value through it on-going commitment to recycling.

What's your GHG score?

Measuring carbon output as a result of business activity is the first step to understanding how to reduce the impact on our environment. Expeditors has developed a standard methodology to consistently measure each branch's carbon load. This methodology uses WRI GHG protocol standards and measures electricity, travel, fuel used in handling cargo at our facilities.

Our global results are already encouraging offices to look at simple ways to reduce electricity use. Installing "smart switches" which turn lights off when an area is not in use, or warehouse lighting improvements are two of the first areas that have yielded the greatest savings.
